A Euroregional campus of excellence

A Euroregional campus of excellence

On Wednesday the 19th November, during the Bordeaux-Euskampus symposium held in Bordeaux, Manuel Tunon de Lara, President of the University of Bordeaux and President of the Board of Directors of the Initiative of Excellence (Idex Bordeaux) along with Iñaki Goirizelaia, Rector of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and President of the Euskampus Foundation, signed together a cooperation agreement. The agreement aims to support the development of “Aquitaine-Euskadi”, a Euroregional campus of excellence.

The project concerns nearly 150,000 students and over 18,000 researchers, thus strongly impacting Euroregional economic development.

The agreement formalizes the cooperation that has existed for 20 years between the two university environments. Just some of the themes covered by the new entity include: student, researcher and lecturer mobility, the diversification of study program offers, research partnerships, and the increasing internationalization of the two sites.

An international campus of excellence

“It is the culmination of a project and at the same time, the start of a new one”, stated Manuel Tunon de Lara during the press conference. Iñaki Goirizelaia described it as the creation of a “campus without borders, open to knowledge transfer” which will increase the “international visibility” of the two universities.

The President of the Aquitaine Region, Alain Rousset, was also present at the signing. He reminded those present that education, training and research were the “main axe” of cooperation within the Euroregion. Iñigo Urkullu, President of the Euroregion, welcomed the birth of an “international campus of excellence” that will support our “development together”.

In addition to the two universities that pilot the Programs of Excellence, Idex Bordeaux and Euskampus, this agreement is open, via an application procedure, to higher education and research institutes or other innovative actors within the Aquitaine-Euskadi Euroregion that wish to participate in the development of a Euroregional campus.
